Dharamsala witnessed an electrifying start to the 2023 ICC Men’s World Cup as Bangladesh showed their mettle by convincingly defeating Afghanistan by six wickets. In a thrilling encounter, Bangladesh displayed their dominance with both bat and ball to secure a resounding victory.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz, the Hero of the Day
One of the standout performers of the match was the dynamic all-rounder, Mehidy Hasan Miraz. He not only made valuable contributions with the ball, scalping three crucial wickets, but also played a pivotal role in Bangladesh’s successful run chase. Scoring an impressive 57 runs off 73 balls, Mehidy steadied the innings, ensuring Bangladesh remained in control throughout. The Afghanistan fielders’ two missed opportunities while he was at the crease proved costly, and Mehidy capitalized on these chances to reach his half-century in just 58 balls. Although he had a close call when he was trapped LBW at 50, the Decision Review System (DRS) came to his rescue. Eventually, Rahmat Shah’s stunning one-handed catch at mid-off ended Mehidy’s brilliant innings, but he had already done his job by then.
Najmul Hossain Shanto Seals the Deal
While Mehidy Hasan Miraz played a significant role, Najmul Hossain Shanto was the anchor of Bangladesh’s innings. His unbeaten 59 off 83 deliveries ensured that Bangladesh comfortably chased down the target with 15.2 overs to spare. The partnership of 97 runs for the third wicket between Najmul and Mehidy was instrumental in Bangladesh’s victory.
Afghanistan’s Promising Start and Subsequent Collapse
Afghanistan showed early promise as their openers, Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz, put up a solid 47-run partnership for the first wicket. However, Shakib Al Hasan’s breakthrough by dismissing Ibrahim for 22 disrupted their momentum. Shakib’s brilliant spell continued as he dismissed Rahmat Shah for 18, putting further pressure on Afghanistan’s run-rate. Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi and Rahmanullah Gurbaz also fell to Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Mustafizur Rahman, respectively, causing Afghanistan’s innings to unravel.
The lower order couldn’t provide much resistance, with Shakib and Taskin Ahmed picking up two more wickets. Azmatullah Omarzai’s brief cameo helped Afghanistan post a competitive total of 156.In summary, Bangladesh’s commanding performance in their opening match has set a strong tone for their campaign in the 2023 ICC Men’s World Cup. With standout performances from players like Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh appears to be a formidable force in the tournament.
