Violence marred a religious procession in Shivamogga, Karnataka, resulting in the arrest of 60 individuals and the registration of 24 criminal cases. However, swift police action has successfully restored peace, particularly in the Ragi Gudda locality, where prohibitory orders were imposed due to escalating tensions and incidents of stone pelting.

Police Actions and Statements

Shivamogga’s Superintendent of Police, G K Mithun Kumar, briefed reporters on the developments, emphasizing the robust response of law enforcement. He confirmed the registration of 24 FIRs and the detention and arrest of 60 individuals connected to the Ragi Gudda incident. Notably, the situation is now peaceful, with no lingering repercussions within the city.

Both Home Minister G Parameshwara and Minister for School Education Madhu Bangarappa echoed the sentiments that the situation is under control. Minister Bangarappa went a step further by visiting houses affected during the incident, addressing concerns, and providing clarifications.

Investigation and Response

Responding to rumors surrounding the involvement of outsiders and a vehicle used by the perpetrators, Mithun Kumar assured that the vehicle in question has been traced, and the investigation is ongoing. He cautioned against prematurely drawing conclusions and creating unnecessary panic among the populace. The investigation will be thorough and consider all aspects of the incident.

According to police reports, an irate mob incited the violence by pelting stones at residences and vehicles, resulting in injuries to several individuals, including police officers. To disperse the mob, law enforcement had to employ lathi-charge tactics. Prior to the stone pelting incident, protests had erupted in the Ragi Gudda area due to a contentious cutout displayed as part of the procession. The police had partially concealed the cutout due to its controversial content, which had agitated members of a particular community.
