Pakistan Urges UN to Investigate Financing and Equipment Sources of TTP

Pakistan has called on the United Nations to investigate the financing sources and acquisition of advanced military equipment by the banned outfit Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Ambassador Munir Akram, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the UN, emphasized the potential global terrorist threat posed by TTP, supported by Al-Qaeda and some state sponsors. Speaking at the UN Security Council on Afghanistan, he urged the council to demand that the interim Afghan government sever ties with the banned TTP. The envoy warned that if left unchecked, TTP could become a global terrorist threat.

Concerns Over Terrorism and Security Threats

Ambassador Munir stressed the significance of counterterrorism in any future roadmap for engagement with the Afghan Interim Government. He highlighted the serious impediment that terrorism poses to normalization in Afghanistan and emphasized that terrorist organizations in Afghanistan pose a security threat to its immediate neighbors. The ambassador called for the highest priority to be given to counterterrorism efforts.

Continued Dialogue and Humanitarian Support

During the debate, various countries, including the US, China, Russia, the UK, and India, participated. China and Russia advocated continued dialogue with the Afghan Taliban and the release of frozen funds, as well as the lifting of sanctions on the Taliban leadership. The Pakistani envoy reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to providing humanitarian help, trade, and development support for the Afghan people. Despite concerns, Pakistan emphasized its ongoing support for Afghanistan’s peace, security, and prosperity.
