Nawaz Sharif’s Sons Seek Suspension of Arrest Warrants in Corruption References
Hussain Nawaz and Hassan Nawaz, sons of three-time Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, have approached an accountability court seeking the suspension of their perpetual arrest warrants in corruption references related to the Panama Papers. The references include Avenfield Apartments, Al-Azizia, and Flagship Investment. Through their counsel, the sons filed an application in the Islamabad accountability court, citing their residence in Saudi Arabia and the UK. They expressed their intention to surrender before the court on March 12, requesting the suspension of arrest warrants for a smooth surrender process.
Residence Abroad and Lack of Due Process
The counsel highlighted that Hussain and Hassan Nawaz were nominated as accused persons in the references along with Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz, and Captain Safdar. He emphasized that the trial began when both were not in Pakistan, and they were unaware of the formal legal process. The lack of proper notice, arrest warrants, and proclamations was noted, and the sons decided to surrender and face trial proceedings. They are set to reach Islamabad on March 12.
Background on Convictions and Legal Challenges
Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz were convicted in the Avenfield reference before the previous general election. The PML-N supremo was also convicted in the Al-Azizia reference in December 2018 but acquitted in the Flagship Investment reference. Challenges to their convictions were pursued in the Islamabad High Court, leading to the suspension of the convictions. When Nawaz Sharif returned to Pakistan in October, his appeals were revived, and the IHC set aside his convictions.
