India Rejects UN Human Rights Concerns Ahead of Lok Sabha Elections
India has strongly dismissed concerns raised by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, regarding the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Arindam Bagchi, India’s permanent representative to the UN in Geneva, addressed the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council, stating that Turk’s comments do not align with the reality of the world’s largest democracy.
Turk’s Concerns and Indian Response
In his global update, Turk expressed worries about “increasing restrictions on the civic space” and “hate speech and discrimination against minorities” in the context of the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. Bagchi responded, asserting that in any democracy, healthy debate is natural, emphasizing the importance of avoiding judgment clouded by propaganda for those in positions of authority.
India’s Democratic Values and Electoral Process
Bagchi highlighted India’s commitment to democratic values, emphasizing plurality, diversity, inclusivity, and openness. He underscored India’s robust electoral process characterized by strong participation and faith in the electoral mandate. Bagchi expressed confidence that the Indian people would freely exercise their vote to choose a government that aligns with their aspirations.
India’s Global Contributions and Human Rights Advocacy
The Indian envoy highlighted India’s global contributions, including assistance during the Covid pandemic, disaster relief efforts, and developmental initiatives. He reiterated India’s enduring dedication to promoting and protecting human rights, emphasizing its civilizational ethos that views the world as ‘one family.’
Call for Multilateral Reforms and Peace Advocacy
Bagchi shifted the focus to pressing global issues, calling for the reformation of multilateral governance structures. He emphasized India’s consistent advocacy for dialogue and diplomacy during conflicts and wars, asserting that peace is crucial for a better future where basic needs are met, and human rights are protected.
