Major Boost for Defence Manufacturing Sector, India Carries Out Maiden Flight of First Made-in-India C-295 Aircraft
NEW DELHI, JUNE 11, 2026 [VoM News]: Achieving a major milestone in the defence manufacturing sector, India has successfully completed the maiden flight of the first made-in-India C-295 military transport aircraft, marking a significant step under the government’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative.
The aircraft is part of a major procurement programme of the Indian Air Force (IAF) aimed at acquiring 56 C-295 transport aircraft at an estimated cost of around Rs 21,935 crore.
Tata Advanced Systems Limited, in coordination with Airbus, is manufacturing and assembling 40 aircraft at the Vadodara production facility, while 16 aircraft are being supplied directly in flyaway condition.
The C-295, a medium tactical transport aircraft, is expected to replace the ageing Avro aircraft fleet and is designed for troop movement, cargo transport, medical evacuation and disaster relief operations.
The development is being seen as a major boost for India’s private defence manufacturing sector and technological advancement, which could strengthen long-term self-reliance in military aviation and defence systems.
