Shreyas Iyer’s Struggles Continue in Ranji Trophy Semifinals
In the Ranji Trophy semifinals against Tamil Nadu, Shreyas Iyer’s struggles in the longer format continued as he managed only three runs before being dismissed by pacer Sandeep Warrier. Recently dropped from the BCCI Central Contract List for 2023-24 due to his absence in domestic red-ball cricket, Iyer faced a setback.
Highs and Lows in Recent Cricketing Journey
Despite a stellar performance in the ICC Cricket World Cup, where he played a pivotal role in India’s journey to the finals, Iyer’s fortunes dwindled in Test cricket. His recent stint in red-ball cricket showcased a decline in form, with just 187 runs in the last seven Tests at an average of 17.00.
Iyer’s Test Struggles
After an impressive start to his Test career, Iyer’s returns diminished significantly. The poor performances during the South Africa tour and the home series against England led to his omission from India’s squad for the subsequent Tests. The BCCI’s emphasis on players participating in domestic cricket played a role in Iyer losing his central contract.
Shift in Focus and Omission
Following the white-ball cricket against South Africa and Australia post the World Cup, Iyer shifted his focus to Tests. However, his performances failed to match the earlier standards. Despite featuring in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy game against Andhra Pradesh, scoring 48 runs, his exclusion from red-ball cricket impacted his contract status.
Match Update
In the ongoing match against Tamil Nadu, Mumbai found themselves struggling against the sharp bowling attack after Tamil Nadu opted to bat first and posted 146 runs. Vijay Shankar and Washington Sundar were the main contributors, while Mumbai faced a challenging task against the opposition’s formidable bowling lineup.
