On Monday morning, the Kharapathar area of Shimla woke up to a picturesque scene as a substantial layer of snow blanketed the region. Over the past 24 hours, higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh experienced a fresh spell of snowfall, transforming popular destinations like Kufri and Lahaul Spiti into winter wonderlands.

The allure of the newly fallen snow prompted tourists from northern India to make their way to Shimla. Atul Jain, a visitor from Punjab staying in Kufri, hurried to Shimla to savor the snowfall, expressing his delight and inviting others to relish the beautiful weather. Jeenu from Delhi, experiencing snowfall for the first time, described it as a dream come true and encouraged everyone to visit and embrace this unique experience.

The recent snowfall brought joy not only to tourists but also rejuvenated the spirits of local hoteliers, raising hopes for a positive impact on the tourism industry in the region.

The cold weather conditions, intensified by heavy snowfall in the past few days, have posed challenges, causing road closures, including major national highways. According to the state Disaster Management Authority, 645 roads, including 4 National highways, are currently closed. Furthermore, 1,416 electricity supply schemes and 52 water supply schemes have been disrupted due to the snowfall.

Despite the delayed arrival of snowfall this season, its eventual occurrence has significantly impacted the region’s infrastructure, affecting essential services like electricity and water supply.

As per data from the State Tourism Department, the late-season snowfall could contribute positively to tourism, which has been a significant economic driver for Himachal Pradesh. In 2019, nearly 17,20,000 tourists, including 4,00,000 foreign visitors, flocked to the state, marking a notable 5 percent increase compared to the previous year.
