Sri Lankan Navy Arrests 23 Indian Fishermen
In another incident, the Sri Lankan Navy arrested a total of 23 Indian fishermen from Rameswaram. The fishermen were apprehended near Delft Island in the Palkbay Sea area while engaged in fishing activities. The Sri Lankan Navy took the arrested individuals to Myalati Naval Camp, Jaffna, for further investigation. This follows a pattern of recent arrests, raising concerns for both the Indian government and the Tamil Nadu authorities.
Continuing Tensions in Waters
Last month, Sri Lankan authorities arrested 18 Indian fishermen and seized two poaching trawlers in their waters. The captured individuals and vessels were handed over for legal proceedings. The recurrent arrests of Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy have been an ongoing issue, discussed at the highest levels between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe during the latter’s visit to India in July of the previous year.
