Akasa Air Places Landmark Order for 150 Boeing 737 MAX Planes, Aims for Global Expansion
In a significant move for India’s aviation sector, Akasa Air revealed on Thursday that it has inked a deal for 150 Boeing 737 MAX narrowbody planes, marking the first major order for Boeing’s MAX jetliner program since a recent mid-air cabin panel incident in the U.S. The order, announced at the “Wings India” air show in Hyderabad, underlines Akasa’s ambition to extend its reach beyond domestic routes and into the international market.
The order comprises 737 MAX 10 and MAX 8-200 models, excluding the MAX 9 version grounded after the Alaska Airlines incident. Akasa anticipates the delivery of these aircraft within the next eight years, as the airline strategically positions itself in the fast-growing aviation market of India.
Despite India’s status as the world’s fastest-growing aviation market, global carriers like Emirates still dominate international traffic. Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia envisions a surge in India’s fleet size to 2,000 within the next decade, up from the current 700, reflecting the robust demand for air travel.
As of now, IndiGo, Air India, and Akasa collectively hold orders for over 1,500 planes, with multi-billion dollar deals announced in the preceding year. Akasa, established in 2022, has quickly captured a 4% market share, positioning itself against industry giants like IndiGo and Tata Group airlines. While initially grappling with a pilot shortage that led to a dip in market share, Akasa has since resolved the issue and is set to strengthen its presence in the Indian aviation landscape.
