Wrestling Nationals in Jaipur Amidst WFI Turmoil: A Crucial Sporting Platform
The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) is gearing up to host the Wrestling Nationals in Jaipur from February 2-5, as announced by the ad-hoc panel appointed by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). This decision comes amidst the suspension of the recently elected WFI body due to non-sports-related controversies, with the ad-hoc committee taking charge of wrestling affairs in India. The move to conduct these nationals follows an impassioned plea from Olympic medalist Bajrang Punia to the Union Sports Ministry of India to resume domestic wrestling competitions, particularly with the Paris Olympics looming.
A Clash Beyond the Mat
The wrestling arena faced turbulence with the suspension of the newly-elected WFI body by the sports ministry for constitutional violations. This suspension nullified all decisions made by the ad-hoc committee. In the midst of these events, Sanjay Singh, a close associate of former WFI head Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, assumed the presidency of the national wrestling body on December 24. This controversy adds tension to the upcoming Wrestling Nationals, raising the possibility of legal intervention if the ad-hoc committee remains disregarded.
The Journey to Jaipur
Despite the contentious environment, the Wrestling Nationals are set to proceed. The tournaments will showcase competitions across senior freestyle, Greco Roman, and women’s sections. Hosted by the Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) at the Railway Stadium in Ganpati Nagar, these championships provide a crucial platform for wrestlers to demonstrate their prowess. This event presents a pivotal opportunity for both seasoned athletes and budding talents to exhibit their skills, gearing up for the Paris Olympics while navigating the ongoing complexities within the WFI.
