Simranjit Kaur Expresses Concern Over Boxing Selection Process for International Events
Renowned boxer Simranjit Kaur, despite losing in the Women’s National Boxing Championships final (60kg) to Jaismine Lamboria, showcased signs of resurgence, raising hope for the upcoming Paris Olympics Qualifier in February.
However, Kaur expressed apprehension about the selection process for major events, specifically criticizing the current system adopted for team selection in Indian boxing.
The shift in selection methodology, instituted by High Performance Director Bernard Dunne, steers away from the traditional selection trials in favor of a weekly assessment in national camps.
This modification has stirred controversy among boxers, including Kaur, who emphasized the preference for the previous trials-based selection process.
Kaur voiced concerns over the fairness of the current evaluation system, citing instances where she lost to Jaismine in the evaluation for the Asian Games, yet felt the need for a more equitable selection criterion.
While acknowledging the regular monitoring by camp coaches, Kaur highlighted the merits of selection trials, noting the impartiality of judges from outside the camps, who solely witness the boxers’ performance in the ring during trials.
Amidst discussions on the selection process, Jaismine’s recent loss at the quarter-finals to Ungyong Won, despite her earlier victory over Kaur, further emphasizes the need for a fair and comprehensive selection method for Olympic qualifiers.
Simranjit Kaur’s critique of the current selection system sheds light on the ongoing debate within the Indian boxing fraternity, raising crucial questions about transparency, fairness, and the efficacy of the current evaluation-based approach over traditional trials.
