Congress Directs J-K Leaders for 2024 Polls, No INDIA Alliance Seat-Sharing Talks Yet

The central leadership of the Congress party issued directives to its leaders in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, instructing them to prepare for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The party clarified that it has not yet engaged in discussions with its alliance partners in the INDIA alliance regarding seat-sharing in the Union Territory for the general elections.

During a meeting held in New Delhi, Congress high command, led by Mallikarjun Kharge and attended by senior leader Rahul Gandhi, J&K party in-charge Bharat Singh Solanki, and others, emphasized the importance of diligent efforts by J&K leaders to secure victory in the anticipated April-May 2024 Lok Sabha polls. A senior party official who participated in the meeting revealed, “The party leadership instructed us to work hard and visit constituencies to ensure the party’s success in the upcoming polls.”

The meeting, lasting nearly 3-4 hours and focusing on preparations for the five Lok Sabha seats in J&K, involved individual briefings by J&K leaders to the high command. Kharge conveyed that discussions with INDIA alliance partners on seat-sharing in J&K have not taken place yet, addressing the National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party’s inclusion in the INDIA alliance and the Peoples Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD).

Vikar Rasool Wani, JKPCC president, mentioned that various issues related to the Lok Sabha polls were discussed during the meeting, and suggestions were provided concerning the alliance and seat distribution. He asserted that the final decision on seat-sharing in J&K would be determined by the INDIA bloc.

In a detailed social media post, Kharge highlighted the extensive discussion with Congress leaders from Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, expressing concern about the rise in terror attacks and targeted killings in the region. He stressed the urgency of restoring full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, with Ladakh becoming a state at the earliest. Kharge also underlined the united demand from the people of Ladakh for safeguards under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.

Kharge concluded by stating the strong commitment of the Congress party and its INDIA bloc allies to the welfare, development, and empowerment of J&K and Ladakh. The meeting was attended by various prominent leaders, including working president Raman Bhalla, senior Congress leader Ghulam Ahmad Mir, former deputy CM Tara Chand, former MLC Ghulam Nabi Monga, former minister Peerzada Muhammad Sayeed, and several others.
