Keir Starmer Resigns as UK Prime Minister, Britain Set for Seventh PM in a Decade
LONDON, June 22, 2026 [VoM News]: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday announced his resignation as Prime Minister and Leader of the Labour Party, bowing to mounting pressure from within his party.
In an emotional address outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer said he would remain in office until a new Labour leader is elected and pledged full support to his successor.
“The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election. I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question and I accept that answer with good grace,” Starmer said.

The outgoing Prime Minister confirmed that he had informed King Charles III of his decision and asked the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee to begin the leadership election process.
According to the proposed timetable, nominations for the leadership contest will open on July 9 and close on July 16, with a new Labour leader expected to be in place before Parliament reconvenes in September.
Starmer thanked his colleagues for their support and paid tribute to his wife, Victoria, and their children during his farewell remarks.
“I will give my successor my full support, knowing they will inherit a stronger Britain,” he said.
The resignation follows growing dissatisfaction within Labour ranks over the government’s declining popularity since the party’s landslide victory in the 2024 general election. Starmer faced criticism over economic challenges, pressures on public services and a series of political controversies.
His decision also comes amid the rising influence of intraparty rival Andy Burnham, who recently won a parliamentary seat and is widely viewed as a potential contender for the Labour leadership.
With Starmer’s departure, Britain is set to see its seventh Prime Minister in just over a decade, marking another significant shift in the country’s political landscape.
