Overview of Asian Markets and Global Trends

In a day of subdued trading due to various market closures in the region, Asian markets displayed a mixed performance on Tuesday. Some Asian markets were closed for holidays, contributing to thinner trading volumes.

Market Highlights:

  • Shanghai and Shenzhen: Shanghai’s benchmark index faced losses primarily driven by selling in technology and computer chip-related stocks, leading to a decline of 0.8%. Similarly, the A-share index in Shenzhen, known for its high-tech listings, dropped by 1.3%.
  • Tokyo and Seoul: Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 experienced a marginal drop of less than 0.1%. In contrast, South Korea’s Kospi index managed to gain 0.1%, displaying a slightly positive trend.
  • Other Markets: Bangkok’s SET index saw a rise of 0.2%, while Taiwan’s Taiex recorded a gain of 0.7%.
  • Closures: Markets in Australia and Hong Kong remained closed. Additionally, some European markets stayed shut for Boxing Day. Both US and European markets were closed on Monday.

In the previous week, Wall Street concluded with its eighth consecutive winning week. The S&P 500 edged up by 0.2%, nearing its record high set almost two years ago at 4,754.63. Meanwhile, the Dow slightly declined by less than 0.1%, and the Nasdaq Composite index rose by 0.2% to 14,992.97.

The market’s quiet finish on Friday followed reports indicating a decline in inflation, juxtaposed against a stronger-than-anticipated economy. This news has contributed to a steady performance in the markets, with the S&P 500 remaining less than 1% below its historical high.
