During a routine operation in Poonch, a total of 31 army personnel, including a trio, lost their lives in the region of Jammu and Kashmir this year.

According to data provided by the news agency Kashmir News Trust, 28 soldiers were killed, and nine others sustained injuries in nine separate encounters across Jammu and Kashmir. Despite numerous encounters in the region throughout the year, casualties were predominantly observed in nine specific incidents—six in Jammu Division and three in the Kashmir Valley.

The fatalities in Jammu Division, particularly in Poonch and Rajouri districts, accounted for at least 21 soldiers, while seven lost their lives during three operations in the Kashmir Valley.

March, June, July, and October passed without any reported army casualties. However, in February, a soldier from Himachal Pradesh lost his life in an encounter at Potgampora Awantipora in Pulwama district. Subsequent months saw increased incidents: five soldiers perished in both April and May, five in November and December, and four in September. Additionally, four soldiers were killed in September, and three lost their lives in August.

The year commenced tragically in January when a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) and two soldiers died in the Machil sector of Kupwara district, slipping into a deep gorge during a routine operation.

In April, a militant attack in Mendhar Sub Division of Poonch district resulted in the deaths of five army personnel, with another soldier sustaining injuries. The attackers, reportedly non-local militants, targeted an army vehicle with grenades using Under Barrel Grenade Launchers (UBGL).

May witnessed five soldiers losing their lives in a blast triggered by militants during a cordon and search operation in the Kandi forest area of Rajouri district in the Jammu region.

In August, three soldiers fell in an encounter in the Halan forest area of South Kashmir’s Kulgam district. September marked the loss of a soldier and an army dog in an encounter in Narla village of Rajouri, while at least three army personnel, including a Colonel and a Major, were killed in the Gadole Kokarnag encounter in South Kashmir.

November brought a tragic 30-hour-long encounter in the Baji Maal forest area of Kalakote Rajouri, resulting in the deaths of five soldiers, including two captains.

The year concluded with a December attack where five army personnel lost their lives, and two others sustained injuries as militants ambushed army vehicles carrying operational teams in the dense forest area on the Thanamandi Surankote road in Poonch.
