China Vows Consular Assistance for Vivo Employees Arrested in India

China has pledged to extend consular protection and aid to two Chinese nationals, employees of smartphone manufacturer Vivo, who were arrested in India.

The Chinese government has urged Indian authorities to refrain from discriminatory actions against Chinese companies, stated Mao Ning, a spokesperson for the foreign ministry, during a regular press conference on Monday.

The arrests were carried out by India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) last week, targeting two high-ranking personnel from Vivo’s Indian division. Vivo has expressed its intention to legally contest the arrests.

Subsequently, the arrested individuals were presented before a Delhi court on Saturday and remanded to the custody of the Enforcement Directorate, as per a source closely involved with the case.

The source, requesting anonymity since they lacked authorization to speak to the media, disclosed that the Vivo employees, whose identities Reuters couldn’t independently verify, are scheduled for their court appearance on Tuesday.

China’s commitment to provide consular assistance underscores its stance on safeguarding the rights and interests of Chinese entities operating abroad, especially in cases where legal disputes arise.

The situation reflects ongoing tensions and challenges faced by Chinese companies in international markets, particularly amid geopolitical complexities between China and India.
