Dravid Upbeat Ahead of India Test Redemption in South Africa
In anticipation of India’s inaugural Test against South Africa at Centurion, head coach Rahul Dravid expressed on Sunday that the brevity of the two-match series poses a challenge for India to recover swiftly from setbacks. Motivated to reclaim their winning form after the recent disappointment of losing the ICC Cricket World Cup final to Australia, India is set to commence the Test series on Tuesday at Centurion. Notably, senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah will be making their international return after the World Cup defeat.
During the pre-match press conference, Dravid emphasized the importance of performing well in these two matches, given the series’ concise nature. Despite not clinching a Test series victory in South Africa since 1992, Dravid expressed confidence derived from past performances, indicating that success in patches has instilled belief in the team’s ability to excel in South African conditions.
Acknowledging the need to move on from the World Cup heartbreak, Dravid highlighted that these Test matches serve as a crucial opportunity for India to qualify for the ICC World Test Championship final in 2025. Emphasizing the significance of maintaining a positive mindset, Dravid noted that the team doesn’t require external motivation to play for India; rather, his role is to create the right environment, ensure focused practice, and adhere to effective processes.
Dravid discussed the challenges posed by bouncy wickets and seam-friendly surfaces, making batting a formidable task. Emphasizing the need for resilience, he noted that extra runs are crucial in these conditions, and the team that outperforms in batting is likely to emerge victorious in the series.
Reflecting on the historical difficulties faced by Indian batters in South Africa, Dravid remained optimistic about the team’s capabilities and experience to perform well this time. He also highlighted the series as an opportunity for KL Rahul to embrace the role of a wicketkeeper-batsman in Test cricket, especially in the absence of Ishan Kishan.
Addressing the team’s playing style, Dravid encouraged players to express themselves while maintaining a balance between freedom and making intelligent decisions, considering the specific tactics and conditions in South Africa. Responding to the possibility of rain affecting the first day of the match, Dravid expressed confidence in the team’s depth and balance to adapt to any situation and make informed decisions based on weather conditions.
India’s Test squad for the series includes Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan (wk), KL Rahul (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Mohd. Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Mohd. Shami*, Jasprit Bumrah (VC), and Prasidh Krishna.
