Pakistan’s Caretaker Prime Minister Extends Hand of Cooperation to Afghanistan Amid Tensions.
Bilateral Relations Steeped in History, Religion, and Culture
In a bid to ease escalating tensions along their shared borders, Pakistan’s caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar has reached out to his Afghan counterpart, Mullah Muhammad Hasan Akhund, urging both nations to collaborate towards achieving common objectives. The move comes at a crucial juncture, with the two neighboring nations grappling with a spate of cross-border attacks on Pakistani soil, primarily attributed to the Afghan Taliban’s alleged support for Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a militant group striving to enforce Sharia law within Pakistan.
Strengthening Ties on Multiple Fronts
Prime Minister Kakar underscored the deeply rooted and fraternal ties between Pakistan and Afghanistan, emphasizing the profound historical, cultural, and religious bonds that connect the two nations. He expressed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to enhancing bilateral relations, encompassing political, security, and economic dimensions. These overtures come on the heels of Pakistan’s accusations that the interim Afghan government has been exploiting the transit trade agreement.
Ensuring Compliance with Trade Agreements
In the midst of burgeoning trade activities between Pakistan and Afghanistan, Prime Minister Kakar called upon the customs authorities to ensure the meticulous adherence to existing agreements and understandings. Stressing the importance of these customs regulations, the Foreign Office echoed the sentiment that the growth in trade between the two nations had been significantly facilitated by Pakistan.
Pursuing Durable Peace and Regional Trade Connectivity
Addressing the recent clash between security forces from both countries, Prime Minister Kakar asserted Pakistan’s active role in promoting lasting peace within Afghanistan. Pakistan has been engaging with the Afghan Taliban and the international community on various forums. Highlighting the commitment made by the Taliban under the Doha Agreement to prevent Afghan soil from being used for terrorism against any nation, he emphasized efforts to address Afghan transit issues and curb illegal trade.
The premier also underscored the burgeoning trade ties not only with Afghanistan but also with all the Central Asian Republics. Recognizing the strategic significance of regional trade connectivity, all stakeholders are increasingly appreciating the benefits of enhanced economic cooperation.
Defending Against Terrorism When Necessary
Prime Minister Kakar reaffirmed Pakistan’s right to self-defense against terrorist activities originating from Afghan soil. He pledged that Pakistan would take the requisite measures to safeguard its citizens and territory when the situation demanded. At the same time, he affirmed Pakistan’s commitment to making prudent decisions when confronted with such challenges in the future.
In a time marked by heightened tensions, Prime Minister Kakar’s diplomatic outreach to Afghanistan reflects a crucial effort to foster stability, cooperation, and peace in the region. With a shared history and interconnected destinies, both nations have much to gain from a harmonious and collaborative relationship.
