Manipal Tigers Secure Legends League Title in Thrilling Final Triumph
In a gripping finale at Surat’s Lalabhai Contractor Stadium, Manipal Tigers clinched the 2023 Legends League title by defeating Urbanrisers Hyderabad by 5 wickets, with six balls to spare.
Their all-around display secured them the championship in the tournament’s second edition.
Having faced an initial setback after losing to Urbanrisers Hyderabad in the first qualifier, the Manipal Tigers staged a remarkable comeback.
They overcame India Capitals in the second qualifier to secure a place in the final showdown.
Winning the toss, Manipal Tigers’ skipper Harbhajan Singh chose to bowl first. Urbanrisers’ openers Dwayne Smith and Martin Guptill were off to a rocky start, with Guptill falling to Pankaj Singh without scoring. Smith’s departure at 21 and a strong partnership between Rikki Clarke (80) and Gurkeerat Singh (64) added 122 runs for the third wicket.
Urbanrisers posted a competitive 187/5, propelled by Peter Trego’s quick 17 runs. Pankaj Singh (2/43) stood out among Manipal’s bowlers.
Chasing 188, Manipal’s Robin Uthappa and Chadwick Walton formed a strong opening stand with 71 runs. After a few quick dismissals, Angelo Perera (30) and Asela Gunaratne (51*) steadied the innings.
Thisara Perera’s contribution (25) brought the Tigers to the cusp of victory. With just one run needed, Colin de Grandhomme sealed the win with a six off his first ball, elevating Manipal Tigers to champions.
Stuart Binny’s remarkable 3/20 led Urbanrisers’ bowling attack, while Shadab Jakati and Jerome Taylor secured a wicket each.
