The Administrative Council (AC) has given its approval for the acquisition of an additional 500 MW of reliable power from the Ministry of Power (MOP) to fulfill the base load power requirements of the Union Territory (UT). Chaired by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, the council, including Rajeev Rai Bhatnagar, Advisor to the Lieutenant Governor, Dr. Arun Kumar Mehta, Chief Secretary, and Dr. Mandeep Kumar Bhandari, Principal Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor, convened to make this decision.

The AC has sanctioned the allocation of an extra 500 MW of firm power from MOP in B(v) mode, with procurement being handled by PFC, to meet the essential base load power demand during winter. A statement released to the press highlighted the necessity for this additional power during the winter months, as the availability is diminished due to the high proportion of hydropower in the UT.

To address the gap between power demand and availability in the winter, the AC has approved the signing of a new Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) by J&K Power Corporation Limited (JKPCL) with NTPC for the operation of Singrauli-II, a crucial athermal power station. This power station is crucial to meeting J&K’s power requirements during the winter when the output from hydro generators of ISGS drops to 150-300 MW, representing a reduction of 70-90% compared to summer generation.

The statement emphasizes that this move will alleviate the increasing energy demand, which is growing at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 10%. By signing a new PPA with NTPC for Singrauli-III, the UT aims to bolster its power availability and overcome the power shortage challenges faced during the lean winter season.
