    The Indian Coast Guard apprehended five Sri Lankan fishermen for illegally crossing into Indian waters. The fishermen were detained near the Adam Bridge sandbar, close to Arichalmunai, Dhanushkodi in the Rameswaram island area.

    Investigation for Possible Smuggling

    The detained fishermen have been handed over to the Tamil Nadu Coastal Security Group Police for further legal proceedings. Authorities are investigating whether their entry into Indian waters was solely for fishing purposes or if they were involved in smuggling contraband into India.

    Vigilance Against Cross-Border Smuggling

    This incident highlights the ongoing issue of smuggling between India and Sri Lanka. Coast Guard personnel in the region remain vigilant to prevent such activities. In a recent operation, the Coast Guard and Customs Department arrested eight Sri Lankan fishermen and four Indians for smuggling sea cucumbers and edible turmeric.

    Recent Coast Guard Operation

    In a notable operation along the international border, four Sri Lankan fishing boats and eight fishermen were arrested for illegal fishing and smuggling activities. They were caught attempting to transport 600 kg of edible turmeric and 250 kg of processed sea cucumber to Puttalam in Sri Lanka.
