Crew Members Released From Indonesia After Diplomatic Efforts

The Indonesian government has liberated three Indian crew members of the M.V. Aashi vessel, following their detainment in February due to their ship running aground. The announcement came from the Indian Embassy in Indonesia, expressing gratitude towards the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia for their cooperation. The release brings an end to a lengthy period of uncertainty for the crew members who were held since their ship encountered difficulties earlier in the year.

External Affairs Minister Acknowledges Successful Repatriation

India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar commended the Indian Embassy in Indonesia on the effective repatriation of the detained crew members. Taking to social media, Jaishankar expressed his satisfaction with the embassy’s efforts, highlighting the joy of having the nationals return home.

Details of the M.V. Aashi Incident

The M.V. Aashi faced hazardous weather on its voyage from Dubai to Indonesia, resulting in the vessel taking on water due to a hull breach. The crew’s prompt action for anchorage and evacuation was followed by the Indonesian authorities’ efficient containment of the asphalt spill from the damaged ship. Despite the challenging circumstances, the crew was cleared of any wrongdoing in relation to the environmental impact of the incident.

Resolution and Repatriation of Detained Officers

After several months of negotiations and diplomatic engagement, the Indian Embassy in Indonesia succeeded in negotiating the release of Captain Sanjeev Kumar, Chief Engineer Sanjay Kumar Pandey, and Chief Officer Siyab Salam. The three men had been under house arrest on Nias Island as the Indonesian authorities conducted their investigations into the ship’s seaworthiness and the circumstances surrounding its grounding.
