India Offers Seven Helicopters for Philippine Coast Guard’s Rescue and Humanitarian Efforts
India has extended a significant gesture of support to the Philippines by offering at least seven helicopters for the use of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) during disaster response and humanitarian operations. The move is expected to enhance the PCG’s capabilities for maritime search and rescue.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
Indian Ambassador to the Philippines, Shambhu Kumaran, discussed the ongoing efforts to reinforce the bilateral relations between the Philippines and India during a courtesy call on Philippine President Ferdinand R Marcos Jr. The talks have been progressing positively, with discussions involving the Indian government, the PCG, and the Department of Transportation (DOTr).
Versatile Helicopters for Security Operations
The helicopters provided by India, originally designed for the Indian Navy and Coast Guard, offer versatility and are suitable for security operations. They can accommodate more passengers and cargo, making them well-suited for active security operations. This strategic cooperation is expected to further the PCG’s ability to respond to various emergencies, particularly in disaster-prone areas.
Aiding Disaster Response and Humanitarian Efforts
This gesture is seen as a significant contribution to the Philippines’ disaster response and humanitarian efforts. The PCG, which falls under the jurisdiction of the DOTr, plays a pivotal role in the country’s maritime security, making this development a crucial step in building the nation’s capacities.
President Marcos expressed his gratitude for India’s support, recognizing the importance of this cooperation in enhancing the PCG’s capacity for search and rescue operations. The President’s intention is to explore this offer further in collaboration with DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista.
