S. Jaishankar Begins Italy Visit with Senate Interaction
India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, commenced his official visit to Italy with an interaction at the Italian Senate. He expressed appreciation for the warm sentiments toward India across party lines during the meeting. This engagement marks an essential step in the deepening partnership between the two nations.
Multi-Stop Official Visit
S. Jaishankar’s official visit to Portugal and Italy spans from October 31 to November 3, as announced by the Ministry of External Affairs. The visit began with a two-day stay in Portugal from October 31 to November 1, followed by engagements in Italy.
India and Italy share friendly and cordial relations, with multifaceted bilateral cooperation. Notably, the relationship was upgraded to a ‘Strategic Partnership’ during the state visit of the Prime Minister of Italy in March of this year.
Crucial Meetings and Trade Relations
During his visit to Italy, EAM Jaishankar is set to meet with several prominent figures, including Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, the Minister of Defence, and the Minister for ‘Made in Italy.’ The discussions are expected to encompass various aspects of the partnership.
Italy ranks among India’s top five trading partners within the European Union, with a trade balance that has favored India for several decades. This visit aims to further strengthen these economic ties.
Engagement with Indian Community
During his stay, EAM Jaishankar will address a Joint Session of the Senate’s External Affairs and Defence Commission, EU Affairs Commission, and the India-Italy Parliamentary Friendship Group. Additionally, he plans to engage with the members of the Indian community in Italy, which is the second-largest Indian community in Europe after the UK.
Promoting India-EU Ties
During his visit to Portugal, EAM Jaishankar addressed the Indian diaspora and highlighted the country’s role in promoting closer India-EU ties. He emphasized the importance of migration and mobility partnerships in a global workplace, as well as the need for direct air connectivity.
