Supreme Court Declines Punjab Government’s Plea Against Bail for Congress MLA in NDPS Case

The Supreme Court, on Thursday, refused to intervene in the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s decision to grant bail to Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira in connection with a Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act case. The bench of justices Bela M Trivedi and KV Viswanathan declined to entertain the plea filed by the Punjab Government, which aimed to challenge the high court’s bail order.

During the proceedings, the Supreme Court sought an explanation from the Punjab Government regarding why Sukhpal Singh Khaira was not initially chargesheeted. The court observed that the entire trial had concluded, and at the eleventh hour, the prosecution agency sought to involve the legislator.

Sukhpal Singh Khaira was recently granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in connection with a drug smuggling case. The Supreme Court’s decision not to interfere implies that the high court’s bail order for the Congress MLA stands.
