The iconic Royal Enfield motorcycles, reminiscent of India’s motorcycling legacy, are facing competition as a new wave of riders embraces diverse preferences and international brands in the country’s two-wheeler market.

Sajneet Sandhu, inspired by her father’s passion for Royal Enfield, now represents a growing segment of female bikers in India, choosing a UK-based Triumph over the traditional Indian brand.

The shifting landscape also witnesses renewed efforts by Harley-Davidson and Triumph, aiming to resonate with India’s vast two-wheeler market.

Harley, previously challenged by taxation and unsuitable designs for Indian roads, now collaborates with local partners to produce more affordable models like the X440.

Triumph, through Bajaj Auto Ltd., introduced Scrambler 400X and Speed 400, which have garnered significant interest.

This strategic shift to produce smaller, affordable models locally is proving fruitful.

However, Royal Enfield remains a frontrunner in mid-engine capacity bikes, selling around 75,140 motorcycles in November, particularly popular during festival seasons.

While brands like Hero, Bajaj, and others capture the majority of the market with budget-friendly models and star-studded marketing campaigns, Royal Enfield maintains its allure with a rich legacy, catering to adventure enthusiasts and remote area riders.

Harley, Triumph, and Royal Enfield share traits of heritage, offer associated merchandise, and boast diverse motorcycle ranges. Sandhu’s preference for Triumph’s Speed 400 illustrates the evolving tastes among Indian riders, seeking sophistication and international appeal.

As the Indian motorcycle market evolves, the introduction of products tailored for local needs by international brands opens opportunities for new entrants, indicating a promising future for diverse offerings and competition in India’s two-wheeler landscape.
