Iran Holds Multi-Day State Funeral for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Under Heavy Guard

Iran Holds Multi-Day State Funeral for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Under Heavy Guard

TEHRAN, July 4 [VoM News] Iran began a multi-day state funeral on Saturday for Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed in an airstrike at the start of the Iran war earlier this year. Khamenei, who was 86, was to be buried on Monday. Thousands gathered at the Grand Mosalla in the capital, where Khamenei’s coffin lay inside a glass enclosure on display.

The mourners offered prayers and cried out — often beating their chests in sorrow — “God bless you!”

    and “Vengeance!”

Coffins bearing family members who also died in the attack rested next to Khamenei’s. Authorities say millions are expected to attend the funeral rites, mirroring those in 1989 after the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Khamenei’s predecessor and ideological guide, who also received an enormous public farewell before his burial. Funerary events will proceed for several days across the nation, and in Iraq as well.

The death comes just as Iran has been in protracted negotiations with Washington for a long-term settlement of tensions that have recently ignited, over such issues as a waterway and American and Iranian sanctions against each other.

It remains unclear if Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba will attend any funeral events. Military commanders here have also issued warnings against both the United States and Israel for any potential action during the period, following reports of threats to Iran’s new leadership structure. Roads are blocked and a heavy police presence is visible around the city as officials plan funeral activities that are to continue into Monday.
