Farmers Begin March Towards Delhi Over India-US Trade Deal, Khanauri Border Put on Alert

Chandigarh, Aug. 17 [VoM News]: It looks like we’re in for another round of protests, as the farmers from Punjab and Haryana are gearing up for a showdown as they set off towards the capital to protest the latest India-US trade agreement.

The folks behind this Kisan Bachao Padyatra (which roughly translates to “Save the Farmers Foot March”) are none other than the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political), led by farmer activist Jagjit Singh Dallewal. The march kicked off this morning from the village of Datasinghwala in Punjab and is making its way to the widely known Jantar Mantar in Delhi.

The point of contention, for now, is the Khanauri border that separates Sangrur in Punjab and Jind in Haryana. The police have set up barriers and are restricting traffic in an attempt to keep the farmers from entering Haryana from Punjab.

What’s happening in the first leg of this march? Well, 51 farmers are marching with soil from the spot where Shubhkaran Singh, a 21-year-old farmer, lost his life back in February of 2024 during a clash between protesters and security personnel. The farmers are slated to start their foot journey this afternoon at around 3 p.m.

The Khanauri border has been the site of intense emotions for the farmers’ movement, ever since the protests of 2024. This latest stir comes just a few days after the police took action against Sikh protesters in Ambala and against protesters demanding justice for a murder victim in Hansi.

The Jind Superintendent of Police, Kuldeep Singh, has said that they are not blocking off all the roads in the district. He clarified that only vehicles heading to and from Punjab via the Khanauri border are being redirected, while other important routes are open.
