12 Killed, 10 Injured After Polish Tourist Bus Overturns on Hungary’s M3 Motorway

Budapest, August 17, 2026 [VoM News]: Early Sunday, a tourist bus with Polish plates overturned on an eastern Hungarian motorway. Local officials confirm that the accident claimed at least 12 lives and left 10 others wounded.

The bus was en route to Nyiregyhaza when it strayed from the M3 motorway and tumbled into a ditch near Mezokeresztes. Authorities state the vehicle veered off the road before rolling over.

According to Hungary’s state news agency MTI, the bus carried 57 passengers and two drivers. Photos from the incident depict a severely damaged bus lying on its side in the ditch; shattered windows and the scattering of personal belongings and luggage surround the wreck.

Initial findings indicate that fatigue may have caused the driver to fall asleep behind the wheel. The driver is now in custody while investigators probe the cause of the crash.

Medical responders transported the injured passengers to hospitals for treatment. Police and emergency services rushed to the scene post-crash.

Polish Prime Minister Peter Magyar took to social media to acknowledge the fatalities, while Polish President Karol Nawrocki offered his condolences to those affected, acknowledging that many of the passengers killed were Polish citizens. Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski called the accident a tragic turn of events and noted that Polish consular services are coordinating with their Hungarian counterparts.

Investigators are currently looking into the factors leading to the crash, including why the bus was on the motorway in the first place.
