BJP National spokesperson, Shehzad Poonawalla resigns from BJP; Cites financial, personal reasons
New Delhi, Aug. 17: National spokesperson of the BJP, Shehzad Poonawalla, has resigned from the party in the face of growing financial and personal pressures.
“This is to inform the world at large that on July 30, I resigned from BJP. As leadership did not agree for days and asked me to reconsider my decision, I have taken a final decision. Will now move to private sector,” Poonawalla said in his resignation letter.
In his letter to BJP national president Nitin Nabin, he said that developments involving “certain individuals” and “reinforcing events with regards to those developments only go to confirm my rationale of resigning”. However, without naming anyone he continued that the “matter related to above developments that came to light reinforce my rationale.”
Poonawalla thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Nabin, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and B.L. Santosh, general secretary, BJP, for giving him the opportunity to be associated with the party for the past five years.
He added that due to growing personal and financial challenges, he will be transitioning to the private sector.
Meanwhile, Poonawalla deleted the description “BJP National Spokesperson” from his X bio in late July, leaving just “Lifelong supporter of PM Modi.”
A lawyer by profession, Poonawalla was once associated with the Congress, from where he was expelled after he publicly expressed strong reservation about the election for party chief last time with allegation of lack of fairness, especially in favor of the party’s leadership. He had joined the BJP after his departure from Congress.
