West Bengal Man Dies After Alleged Assault Linked to Son’s CJP Protest; Suvendu Adhikari Assures Action

Bankura, Aug. 17: A tragic incident unfolded in West Bengal’s Bankura district where a 51-year-old man lost his life following an alleged assault by a group after his son joined a protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. Police confirmed the unfortunate event.

The victim, identified as Sheikh Mohammed Mafiq, was reportedly attacked on August 13th. The assailant group reportedly entered the residence of Mafiq’s son, Sheikh Abdul Hafiz, a member of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). Hafiz had traveled to Delhi on July 19th to take part in a demonstration protesting alleged NEET paper leaks.

According to the victim’s family, Hafiz had later visited Karishunda Primary School as part of the CJP’s “Fix The School” initiative. He had reportedly expressed concerns regarding the school’s infrastructure and its management. The family claims that on that same night, a mob armed with rods and sticks barged into their home and attacked Hafiz. Mafiq was reportedly beaten as he attempted to protect his son.

The family further recounted that both father and son were initially taken to the hospital and discharged. However, they allege that the assailants attacked them once more while they were returning home. They also claim that the family was held captive in their home the following day, and Mafiq’s health took a turn for the worse. He was transported to the hospital with the help of the police and tragically passed away during treatment on August 15th.

Bankura Additional Superintendent of Police Krisanu Rai stated that a formal complaint was lodged on August 16th, leading to the arrest of eight individuals who have since been produced before a court. Police have thus far not identified any political links to the crime.

West Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari distanced the party from any involvement, asserting that the individuals arrested were criminals and would face the full force of the law. In contrast, CJP spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka placed the blame on BJP workers and announced that CJP members would be visiting Bankura to demand justice for the grieving family.
