Canada Moves Diplomats From India to Singapore and Malaysia Amid Diplomatic Row
Canada has relocated the majority of its diplomats working in India from New Delhi to either Kuala Lumpur or Singapore following a diplomatic row with India. India had given Canada until October 10 to reduce its diplomatic staff in the country to a level on par with the number of Indian diplomats in Canada. This move comes after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged Indian involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June. India rejected the allegations, and a diplomatic tit-for-tat ensued.
The Indian government’s demand for parity in diplomatic strength has led to the evacuation of Canadian diplomats from various parts of India. While the exact number of diplomats affected is not specified, Canada has been asked to reduce its diplomatic presence to achieve parity.
The diplomatic tensions between Canada and India appear to be escalating, with Canada being accused of interference in India’s internal matters. Discussions on the modalities to achieve mutual diplomatic presence are ongoing, but it remains to be seen how this situation will further impact diplomatic relations between the two countries.
