Malaysia extends Search for MH370 to 2027

Malaysia extends search for MH370 to 2027

KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 [VoM News]: The search for the wreckage of missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 has been extended for a further year, Malaysia’s transport minister announced on Thursday, prolonging a search for one of aviation’s biggest enigmas more than 12 years after the aircraft vanished.

The agreement with American exploration firm Ocean Infinity has been extended until June 30, 2027, on the same “no find, no fee” basis. Under the deal Ocean Infinity gets paid $70 million (RM329 million) only if it finds debris.

The extended search will cover the remaining 7,428.54 sq km of the planned zone. Loke said it reflected the government’s continued commitment to giving an answer to the 239 people on board.

“The Malaysian government and Ocean Infinity will continue our search,” Loke told a news conference, adding that Ocean Infinity’s main search vessels were temporarily deployed elsewhere for commercial purposes and were expected to be in the area between November 2026 and April 2027 when sea conditions would be favourable.

MH370, a Boeing 777 carrying 239 people from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, disappeared from radar on March 8, 2014, during its scheduled flight. Despite extensive searches, by Australia and a private vessel hired by Ocean Infinity, no sign of the aircraft has been found.

Families of those on board have frequently pushed for greater transparency from investigators and updates on the ongoing search operations.
