China Reaffirms Support for Teesta Project, Says Bangladesh Cooperation Is Not Directed at Any Third Party
BEIJING, June 29, [VoM News]: China has reaffirmed its support for the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project (TRCMRP), saying its cooperation with Bangladesh is aimed at development and should not be influenced by any third party.
Responding to questions over India’s concerns, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said China-Bangladesh cooperation does not target any other country. He described the Teesta project as a livelihood initiative that is of significant importance to Bangladesh and said Beijing is ready to provide support.
Guo added that China is willing to deepen cooperation with Bangladesh in areas including trade, water conservancy and public welfare, while strengthening coordination on development strategies.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman said experts from both countries will carry out a technical feasibility study for the Teesta project, marking a new phase in bilateral cooperation. He said China has assured Bangladesh of its support, subject to the study’s findings.
The project has drawn close attention from India because the Teesta basin lies near the strategically important Siliguri Corridor, often referred to as the “Chicken’s Neck,” which links India’s northeastern states with the rest of the country.
Earlier this year, the Bangladesh Water Development Board and POWERCHINA extended their memorandum of understanding to advance the proposed river management project.
