Liquor Ban in Jammu Kashmir: Committee Constituted to Examine the Possibility of Ban says Minister Javed Rana
Jammu Kashmir, June 04, 2026 [VoM News]: In a major move to consider the imposition of a ban on the sale and consumption of liquor in Jammu Kashmir, the Omar Abdullah-led government has constituted a committee to examine the possibility and probability of imposing the ban.
After a high-level meeting of National Conference legislators and independent MLAs supporting the government took place in Dachigam, the announcement was made by Jal Shakti, Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister Javed Rana.
Rana said that the issue was also discussed during the deliberations, and regarding this, the committee was constituted and tasked to study various aspects of the proposal.

Rana said that once the committee submits its report, the matter will be placed before the Chief Minister for a final decision, as its recommendations will be reviewed. However, no specific timeline for the submission of the report has been mentioned.
People in Jammu Kashmir have raised the demand for a liquor ban as the number of shops has increased massively, leading to addiction and social evils.
A few weeks ago, people protested in Kishtwar against the opening of wine shops in the locality, demanding their immediate removal. Similar reports also came from Chenab Valley and other areas.
This could be a drastic step if the Omar Abdullah-led government approves the imposition of a ban on liquor sale and consumption in Jammu Kashmir.
