Lake Beautification and Preservation Efforts
Regarding the selection of locations for lake beautification, the DC mentioned that Zurimanz village, affectionately known as “Bangladesh,” has been identified as an ideal destination for domestic and foreign tourists alike. The plans include introducing a variety of water sports activities and other exciting initiatives to enhance the lake’s appeal.A pedestrian pathway is currently under development around the lake, designed to attract a growing number of tourists. Further enhancements are in the pipeline, promising an enriched experience for visitors.
Addressing Wular Lake’s Decades-Long Challenges
Over the past three decades, Wular Lake has suffered a decrease in its carrying capacity due to deforestation and encroachment. These issues have led to deteriorating water quality caused by the unchecked disposal of sewage and solid waste. Additional problems include blocked inlet and outlet channels and degradation of the surrounding forests.
While the WUCMA was established in September 2012 for lake conservation, substantial progress only began in May of the previous year with the launch of the first phase, focusing on ecotourism development. In addition to land and water resource management, WUCMA is dedicated to preserving biodiversity, promoting ecotourism, creating a picturesque lake shoreline, establishing recreational parks, bird-watching spots, and constructing the Wular Boulevard.Recently, a pivotal second meeting of the WUCMA was chaired by Principal Secretary for Forest, Ecology, and Environment, Dheeraj Gupta.
During this meeting, a thorough review of various wetland conservation projects took place, with a particular emphasis on the Integrated Management Plan for Conservation of Wular Lake.Principal Secretary Gupta issued crucial instructions to WUCMA officers, urging them to implement all necessary measures for the preservation and conservation of Wular Lake.
He underscored the vital role of wetlands in maintaining ecological balance, contributing to water purification, flood control, providing a habitat for biodiversity, and enhancing Jammu and Kashmir’s economy as sought-after tourist destinations.Local residents are now optimistic that the beautification of Wular Lake will attract a growing number of tourists, ultimately bolstering the local economy. For many, the lake is their sole source of livelihood, and its restoration is a source of great pride.
