Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Jammu on Saturday to address an election rally in Doda town. This will mark the first time since 1979, when Indira Gandhi was in power, that a Prime Minister has addressed a gathering in Doda, part of the Chenab Valley.

The Assembly seats in the Chenab Valley will vote in the first phase of Jammu & Kashmir’s Assembly polls on September 18. In the previous 2014 elections, the BJP won four of the six seats in the region. After the 2022 delimitation exercise, two new constituencies — Doda West and Padder-Nagseni — have been carved out, bringing the total number of seats to eight.

The rally in Doda is part of the BJP’s strategy to make inroads into South Kashmir, despite only fielding 19 candidates in the Valley. Party insiders describe this approach as a tactical move, with potential support for Independent candidates who may disrupt traditional political powers.

Following the Doda rally, Modi will also address a rally in Kurukshetra, Haryana, ahead of the state’s Assembly elections, scheduled for October 5, with vote counting on October 8.
