    3. Bangladesh PM vows to resist external pressures and conspiracies.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has alleged that a plot is being hatched to create a “Christian state like East Timor” from parts of Bangladesh and Myanmar, according to The Daily Star. She asserted that she “won’t let this happen” and revealed that she was offered a hassle-free re-election in the upcoming January 7 polls if she allowed a foreign country to establish an airbase in Bangladesh. Hasina, however, did not disclose the country’s name that made this proposal.

Delivering her remarks at the 14-party meeting at the Gono Bhaban on Sunday, the Awami League president highlighted the challenges she faces both domestically and internationally. “Like East Timor… they will carve out a Christian country, taking parts of Bangladesh (Chattogram) and Myanmar with a base in the Bay of Bengal,” Hasina said. She pointed out the strategic significance of the Bay and the Indian Ocean, emphasizing, “Many have their eyes on this place. There is no controversy here, no conflict. I won’t let that happen.”

Regarding the airbase proposal, Hasina mentioned, “The offer came from a white man,” suggesting broader geopolitical intentions behind the proposal. She indicated that declining the proposal has put her government in continual trouble but assured, “There will be more trouble. But don’t worry about it.”

The Prime Minister also accused the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) of attempting to prevent the elections. Addressing economic concerns, she noted that although inflation needs to be curbed, there is sufficient production and no shortage of resources. She stated that foreign exchange reserves are dwindling worldwide, including in Bangladesh, but emphasized the importance of maintaining food stocks for emergencies.

In a closed-door meeting following her speech, Hasina discussed the conspiracies against her government, comparing them to the tragic fate of her father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who was assassinated in 1975. She emphasized that despite these challenges, she would never succumb to pressure and reiterated that Bangladesh would not purchase goods from countries imposing sanctions on it.
