Electricity Restored After Protest in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Key Highlights:
- Residents stormed Hazar Khawani grid station amid loadshedding protests.
- PTI lawmaker Fazal Elahi led the protest demanding electricity restoration.
- Lahore also faces unannounced loadshedding, exacerbating the ongoing heatwave.
Angry residents of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa took matters into their own hands on Saturday by storming into the Hazar Khawani grid station to restore electricity following prolonged loadshedding. Led by PTI lawmaker Fazal Elahi, protesters surrounded the station and forcibly switched on nine high-loss feeders, including Yaka Tut and Akhunabad. Pesco officials cited power theft and non-payment of dues as reasons for the high losses on these feeders.
Meanwhile, residents of Lahore also grapple with unannounced loadshedding, exacerbating the effects of the ongoing heatwave. Some areas face continuous power cuts for one hour every hour during the day, affecting daily life. The demand for power exceeds the quota, leading to further strain on the system. Additionally, a fire at the Sabzazar grid station has caused tripping, worsening the situation.
This isn’t the first time residents have protested against power outages. Earlier in May, women and residents of Chota Lahor tehsil in Swabi blocked roads against prolonged loadshedding, demanding immediate action from authorities. The protesters criticized public representatives for failing to address the electricity problem despite promises made during election campaigns. They vowed to hold representatives accountable and called for a reduction in load-shedding duration.
