Key Highlights:
- Islamabad High Court approves bail for Imran Khan in a PKR 190 million corruption case.
- Khan’s bail set at PKR 1 million; remains incarcerated for other cases.
- Case involves allegations of illegal fund transfer and land acquisition from Bahria Town Ltd.
The Islamabad High Court has granted former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan bail in a PKR 190 million corruption case, reported Dawn. The decision came after the court reserved its verdict following arguments from both the National Accountability Bureau’s prosecution team and Khan’s lawyer, Sardar Latif Khan Khosa. While Khan’s bail was set at PKR 1 million, he will remain in prison due to ongoing sentences in other cases, including the cypher and iddat cases.
The corruption case implicates Khan and his spouse, alleging the illegal transfer of funds and land acquisition from Bahria Town Ltd. The trial is nearing conclusion, with 30 out of 59 prosecution witnesses having testified so far. Khan’s lawyer argued the case’s baselessness, highlighting the absence of money laundering allegations. The funds in question were seized by the UK’s National Crime Agency and returned to Pakistan under an out-of-court settlement. Despite the government’s facilitation, the legal process to retrieve the funds through UK courts was deemed time-consuming.
The case also involves property tycoon Malik Riaz Hussain and others, who were declared proclaimed offenders for absconding from the probe and court proceedings. With Imran Khan’s bail approved, the legal battle continues amidst allegations of financial misconduct and illegal transactions.
