Rajasthan Government Initiates Caste Survey Ahead of Assembly Polls: Population Census for a Deeper Understanding

In a significant move, the Rajasthan government has issued an order to conduct a comprehensive caste survey within the state. This announcement comes shortly after Bihar unveiled the findings of its own caste survey. Rajasthan, currently governed by the Congress, is now poised to become the second state in India to undertake such a population count.

    Government Nod and Methodology

The order to conduct the caste survey was officially sanctioned by the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, following approval from the state cabinet. Rajasthan’s government has committed to executing the survey using its own resources, aiming to gather extensive data on the social, economic, and educational status of all its residents. The Department of Planning (Economic and Statistics) has been designated as the nodal department responsible for overseeing this ambitious initiative. However, the order does not specify a timeline for the completion of the population count.

    Political Significance

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot had previously hinted at this development, and the order aligns with the broader strategy of the opposition INDIA bloc. The bloc has championed the cause of a nationwide caste census, believing it will have a significant impact on the upcoming elections in the Hindi heartland, where caste politics wields considerable influence.

The recent release of Bihar’s caste survey results on Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary unveiled that Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and Extremely Backward Classes (EBCs) constitute a substantial 63 percent of the state’s total population. This data underscores the intricate interplay of caste dynamics in Indian politics.

The Congress is an integral part of both the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc and the ruling coalition in Bihar, positioning itself to navigate the evolving political landscape shaped by caste demographics.
