Congress’s Key Decision-Making Body, CWC, Convenes to Shape Electoral Strategy and Discuss Caste Census; Gears Up for Five-State Assembly Elections

The Congress Working Committee (CWC), the apex decision-making body of the Congress party, is set to convene on October 9 in Delhi. This crucial meeting will focus on evaluating the current political landscape and charting a strategic course for the impending assembly elections in five states. The Congress party aims to maintain its stronghold in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, while seeking to unseat the BJP in Madhya Pradesh, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) in Telangana, and the Mizo National Front (MNF) in Mizoram.

Debating the Caste Census and OBC Rights

One pivotal aspect that is expected to dominate discussions during the CWC meeting is the caste census. The Congress party has been vocally advocating for a caste-based census and demanding that rights be allocated based on population, with a particular focus on empowering the Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

Addressing Political Heat Amid Central Agency Actions

The timing of the CWC meeting is significant, as it coincides with mounting pressure on certain opposition leaders from central agencies. The recent arrest of AAP leader Sanjay Singh in the Delhi excise policy case underscores the challenges faced by opposition figures. The Congress party’s top leadership will need to deliberate on extending support to leaders like Singh and others who find themselves in the government’s crosshairs.

This CWC gathering follows the initial meeting of the reconstituted Congress Working Committee, which took place in Hyderabad on September 16. During that meeting, strategies were formulated for the upcoming assembly elections in five states and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Key Attendees and the CWC’s New Composition

The CWC meeting will see the participation of Chief Ministers from Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, adding weight to the deliberations. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge had revamped the CWC on August 20, maintaining a balance between seasoned leaders and emerging talent within the 84-member committee. This gathering marks the first time the CWC is meeting in the national capital.

The CWC comprises 39 regular members, 32 permanent invitees, and 13 special invitees, including a significant representation of women and fresh faces, exemplifying the Congress party’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity.
