US Senator Ben Cardin Expresses Concern Over CAA Impact
US Senator Ben Cardin has voiced deep concern over the potential impact of India’s Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) on the Muslim community. He highlighted the timing of the law’s implementation during the holy month of Ramadan, emphasizing the importance of protecting human rights regardless of religion in the growing US-India relationship.
Implementation of CAA
India recently implemented the CAA, which grants citizenship to undocumented non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan who arrived in India before December 31, 2014. The Indian government assured that the law does not affect the citizenship of Indian Muslims, affirming their equal rights.
US State Department’s Response
The US State Department expressed concern over the CAA’s implementation, emphasizing the importance of religious freedom and equal treatment under the law for all communities. However, India criticized the US’s stance, defending the CAA as a humanitarian effort to protect persecuted minorities.
Support for CAA
The Hindu Policy Research and Advocacy Collective (HinduPACT) and the Global Hindu Heritage Foundation supported the CAA, citing its humanitarian principles. They argued that the legislation aims to safeguard persecuted minorities from religious persecution in India’s neighboring countries.
Criticism and Defense
HinduPACT criticized the US government for opposing the CAA, asserting that it stands for human rights and the protection of persecuted minorities. They highlighted the plight of girls from Hindu, Sikh, and Christian minority communities in Pakistan, urging action against their abduction and forced conversion.
Addressing Persecution
The Global Hindu Heritage Foundation emphasized that the CAA addresses the plight of minorities facing persecution in neighboring Islamic countries. They highlighted the atrocities endured by these minorities and defended the CAA as a measure to uphold secularism, peace, and humanity.
