Farmers Vow Prolonged Protest Until Key Demands Addressed
Amidst the ongoing ‘Delhi Chalo’ movement, farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher stated on Saturday that the agitation would persist until their demands were fulfilled. The protest, stationed at Khanauri and Shambhu points on Punjab’s border with Haryana, has seen thousands of farmers with their tractor-trolleys and trucks, emphasizing various demands, including a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) for crops.
Stalemate and Pause in the March:
The ‘Delhi Chalo’ march, led by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM), encountered a setback when it was put on hold for two days after clashes resulted in a protester’s death and injuries to around 12 police personnel at Khanauri. The incident unfolded as some farmers attempted to advance towards barricades.
Continued Determination and Future Plans:
Addressing reporters at the Shambhu border point, KMM leader Pandher affirmed that the agitation would persist until their demands were met, hinting at a decision to be announced on February 29. He emphasized, “If they (Centre) accept our demands tomorrow, we will take a decision on the agitation.”
Model Code of Conduct and Ongoing Protest:
Regarding the imposition of the model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha polls, Pandher dismissed concerns, stating, “We do not have to distribute tickets for MPs. So we do not need to worry about the model code of conduct.” He expressed the belief that the agitation might continue even when the model code of conduct is enforced.
Unyielding Demands and Failed Negotiations:
Despite four rounds of talks between farmer leaders and Union ministers, a breakthrough to end the stalemate remains elusive. The farmers’ demands include a legal guarantee for MSP, farm debt waiver, implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations, pension for farmers and laborers, no hike in electricity tariff, withdrawal of police cases, justice for the victims of the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence, reinstatement of the Land Acquisition Act, 2013, and compensation for the families of farmers who died during a previous agitation in 2020-21. The protesters are resolved to continue camping at the two protest sites until their next course of action is decided on February 29.
