Farmers Demand Justice and Martyr Status
Amidst the ongoing farmers’ agitation, the demands for a legal guarantee on the minimum support price (MSP), the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations, and a farm loan waiver persist as the core issues driving the protest.
Clashes at Khanauri: Farmer’s Death Sparks Tensions
A tragic turn of events occurred as clashes at Khanauri resulted in the death of a 21-year-old farmer, Shubhkaran Singh. Grievances were expressed by farmer leaders, demanding justice for Singh and delaying the cremation until their demands were met. The situation intensified as protestors criticized the Punjab Police’s hesitation to file an FIR against Haryana security personnel, whom they held responsible for Singh’s death.
Compensation Offer: Failed Attempts to Pacify Protestors
In response to the unrest, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced compensation of ₹1 crore and a government job for Singh’s sister. Despite this, protestors remained steadfast in their demand for an FIR against those responsible for the young farmer’s death. Another setback unfolded with the announcement of the death of 62-year-old Darshan Singh, marking the fourth casualty during the ongoing protests.
Government’s Assurance: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Speaks Out
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman addressed the situation, highlighting the government’s commitment to farmers’ welfare. She announced the formation of a three-member committee of ministers to engage in negotiations with the protestors. Sitharaman emphasized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s continuous efforts for farmers’ well-being but faced resistance from the protesting farmers.
Amid the tensions, Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait emphasized the need for resolution through dialogue. Tikait underlined the vital role played by those living in forest areas in protecting the environment and called for continuous talks with the Centre to find a solution to the ongoing crisis.
