Rights Groups Urge EU Support for ICJ Measures Against Genocide
Eleven human rights organizations have jointly appealed to 16 EU countries, urging them to publicly ensure Israel’s compliance with the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) provisional measures against genocide. Expressing dissatisfaction with the EU’s response, the organizations noted that not enough European states have committed to adhering to the legal obligations outlined in the provisional measures or ensuring their implementation by Israel.
On January 26, the ICJ found plausible evidence of Israel committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. The provisional measures include preventing genocidal acts, facilitating immediate humanitarian aid to Gaza, and requiring Israel to report back to the Court on its implementation within a month.
The groups emphasized the contrast in EU member states’ support for ICJ rulings on conflicts in Ukraine and Myanmar, highlighting perceived double standards in applying the Genocide Convention between different regions.
