Jammu Authorities Clamp Down on Social-Media for Communal Harmony Concerns
On Wednesday, authorities in Jammu issued a directive to social media news portals within the district, urging them to abstain from disseminating messages that could jeopardize communal harmony, incite breaches of peace, and disrupt public tranquility.
As per the issued order, the Deputy Commissioner of Jammu expressed concern over the perceived likelihood of a serious breach of peace, order, and public tranquility. This concern stemmed from the dissemination of disinformation on social media platforms, involving the posting and sharing of derogatory, discriminatory, and provocative messages, which could pose a grave danger to human lives and property.
Emphasizing the importance of promptly preventing any potential breach of peace and order, the Deputy Commissioner highlighted the appropriateness of invoking Section 144 of The Code of Criminal Procedure. This legal provision would empower the authorities to prohibit individuals and social media news platforms/portals operating in Jammu from posting or sharing any content that has the potential to disturb communal harmony, cause breaches of peace, or disrupt public tranquility.
The order, effective immediately, warned that any violation would lead to punitive action under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860. This underscores the authorities’ commitment to maintaining public order and preventing the dissemination of content that could have detrimental effects on the community’s well-being.
