Uttarakhand Cabinet Approves Draft Report on UCC
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Uttarakhand Cabinet held a crucial meeting to discuss and approve the draft report on the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). The UCC drafting committee, led by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai, submitted the draft, proposing uniform civil laws for all communities in the state. Once approved, Uttarakhand will become the first Indian state post-independence to adopt the UCC. The UCC aims to establish a legal framework for uniform marriage, divorce, land, property, and inheritance laws for all citizens, regardless of their religion.
UCC Bill to be Presented in Assembly on February 6
Following the Cabinet’s approval, the government plans to present the UCC Bill in the Assembly on February 6. Chief Minister Dhami emphasized the importance of the UCC in realizing the vision of ‘Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat.’ The move aligns with a resolution adopted by the BJP. The UCC drafting panel, including retired justice Pramod Kohli, social activist Manu Gaur, Shatrughan Singh, and Surekha Dangwal, played a pivotal role in preparing the draft, receiving several extensions for their work.
Fulfillment of BJP’s Promise and Landmark Development for Uttarakhand
The approval and adoption of the UCC in Uttarakhand mark the fulfillment of a significant promise made by the BJP during the 2022 Assembly polls. The state’s elections resulted in a decisive victory for the BJP, securing a second consecutive term. The UCC will provide a standardized legal framework, addressing marriage, divorce, and inheritance laws uniformly for all citizens, contributing to a landmark development for Uttarakhand.
