Welfare Of Poor, Women, Farmers Centre’s Highest Priority: Nirmala Sitharaman
In her presentation of the Interim Budget for 2024-25, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman emphasized the government’s highest priority in meeting the needs and aspirations of four “major castes”—the poor, women, the youth, and farmers. Asserting an approach to ensure all-round, all-pervasive, and all-inclusive development, Sitharaman highlighted the goal of making India ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047. She underlined the importance of improving people’s capabilities and empowering them for sustainable development.
Focus on “Four Major Castes”
Identifying the “four major castes” as the poor, women, youth, and farmers, Sitharaman stressed that their needs, aspirations, and welfare are the government’s highest priority. Emphasizing that the country progresses when these groups progress, she outlined the government’s commitment to supporting their quest for a better life. Sitharaman expressed that the empowerment and well-being of these major castes will drive the overall progress of the country.
Social Justice as Governance Model
Finance Minister Sitharaman highlighted a shift in perspective from social justice being a political slogan to becoming an effective and necessary governance model for the current government. She emphasized the saturation approach, covering all eligible people, as a comprehensive achievement of social justice. This approach ensures transparency, reduces corruption, prevents nepotism, and guarantees that benefits are delivered to all eligible individuals.
Addressing Systemic Inequalities
Sitharaman acknowledged the government’s focus on addressing systemic inequalities that had plagued society. By distributing resources fairly, regardless of social standing, the government aims to provide equal access to opportunities for all. The finance minister underscored the commitment to focusing on outcomes rather than outlays to achieve socio-economic transformation.
The Interim Budget reflects a strategic approach to inclusive development, aiming to uplift and empower the marginalized sections of society for comprehensive progress.
